Why "Too Flexible" Can Feel So Tight: Understanding Hypermobility and Hidden Stiffness
The Puzzle of the Flexible Person Who Feels Stiff
One of the most common things I hear at Omni Family Chiropractic goes something like this: "Dr. Joe, I'm actually really flexible — I always have been — so why does my neck feel like a rock?"
It sounds contradictory, doesn't it? How can someone who can touch their palms flat to the floor also feel constantly stiff, tense, and achy?
The answer lies in a simple but powerful truth about how your body works: for every area that moves too much, there has to be an area that moves too little. Your body is always trying to find balance, and when one region becomes overly mobile, another region tightens up to compensate.
Hypermobility and Hypomobility: Two Sides of the Same Coin
Let me break down two words that might be new to you:
- Hypermobility means a joint or region moves more than it should.
- Hypomobility means a joint or region moves less than it should.
Here's the key insight: they rarely happen in isolation. When part of your body is loose and moving too freely, another part often "locks down" to create stability. Your body doesn't like chaos — it wants control. So it borrows stiffness from one area to make up for excess motion in another.
That stiffness you feel? It's often your body's protective response, not the actual root of the problem.
Where This Shows Up in Real Life
This pattern plays out all over the body, and once you know what to look for, you start seeing it everywhere:
- Loose shoulders, tight neck: When the shoulder joints are hypermobile, the muscles around the neck and upper spine tighten to create stability — leading to that chronic neck tension so many people struggle with.
- Flexible hips, achy low back: If your hips move too much (or unevenly), your lower back frequently stiffens up to compensate, giving you that nagging back pain.
- Bendy ankles, tight calves or knees: Instability lower down forces the surrounding areas to work overtime.
Nowhere is this more noticeable than in the spine, which is made up of 24 movable bones that need to work together like a well-coordinated team. When a few segments move too much, others get "stuck" to hold everything together.
One of our patients — a former dancer — came in convinced she just needed to "stretch more." She was incredibly flexible, but her upper back felt like concrete. Once we identified that her stiff mid-back was actually compensating for excessive movement elsewhere, her whole approach changed. Restoring proper motion to the stuck areas gave the overworked muscles permission to finally relax.
Why Stretching More Often Backfires
Here's where a lot of flexible people go wrong: they feel tight, so they stretch. But if the tight area is stiff because it's stabilizing a hypermobile region, aggressive stretching can make things worse. You end up loosening an area that was actually doing its job, while the truly hypomobile spots stay locked.
The goal isn't to make everything looser. The goal is balance — restoring proper motion where it's missing so no single area has to work so hard.
How Chiropractic Care Helps Restore Balance
This is exactly where chiropractic care shines. Your nervous system — the master control center running through your spine — depends on healthy, balanced motion to send clear signals throughout your body. When spinal segments become hypomobile (we call this a subluxation), it can interfere with that communication and keep the compensation cycle going.
By gently and specifically addressing the areas that aren't moving enough, we take the pressure off the areas that are working overtime. The result?
- Less chronic tension and stiffness
- Better nervous system communication
- More even, comfortable movement
- A body that stops fighting itself
When your spine moves the way it's designed to, your whole system can relax and function better.
