Understanding Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and How Gentle Chiropractic Can Help

What Is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?

If your joints seem to move a little too much — bending in ways that surprise your friends, popping out of place, or leaving you sore for reasons you can't explain — you may be living with something called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, or EDS for short.

EDS is a group of inherited conditions that affect your connective tissue. Connective tissue is the "glue" that holds your body together. It's found in your skin, your ligaments, your tendons, and the walls of your blood vessels. When you have EDS, your body makes this glue a little differently — usually making it stretchier and less stable than it should be.

The most common form is called hypermobile EDS (hEDS), and it's exactly what it sounds like: your joints are extra flexible. While that might sound like a party trick, in reality it often means:

  • Joints that dislocate or "sublux" (partially slip out of place) easily
  • Chronic pain and muscle fatigue
  • Poor coordination or a sense of clumsiness
  • Frequent sprains and injuries
  • Headaches and neck instability

Why Your Joints and Nervous System Are Connected

Here's something many people with EDS don't realize: your spine protects your nervous system, and your nervous system controls everything — how you move, how you feel pain, how your muscles fire, and how your organs function.

When your ligaments are loose, your spine has a harder time staying properly aligned. Small misalignments in your spine — what we call subluxations — can irritate the nerves nearby. This is a big deal for EDS folks, because your body is already working overtime to keep unstable joints in place.

"I spent years being told my pain was 'just anxiety' or that I was too flexible to be hurting. When I finally understood that my spine wasn't holding position and my nervous system was on high alert, everything clicked." — a patient story we hear often at Omni

The Regions EDS Tends to Affect Most

In my experience caring for hypermobile patients, certain areas of the body take the biggest hit. If you have EDS, you may recognize a few of these:

  • The upper neck (upper cervical spine): This is where your skull meets your spine, and it's a hotspot for instability. Problems here can trigger headaches, dizziness, brain fog, and neck pain.
  • The lumbosacral region (low back): Where your spine meets your pelvis, loose ligaments often lead to aching, stiffness, and that "my back went out" feeling.
  • The hips: Frequently unstable, hips can cause pain that radiates into the legs or groin.
  • The shoulder blades: Poor stability here leads to shoulders that ache, click, or feel "out of socket."

How Gentle Chiropractic Can Help

Now, I want to be clear about something important. Traditional, forceful "cracking" adjustments are usually not the right approach for someone with EDS. Your joints are already too loose — the goal is never to loosen them more.

Instead, chiropractic care for EDS focuses on:

  • Gentle, low-force techniques that restore proper nerve communication without overstretching your joints
  • Calming an overactive nervous system so your body isn't stuck in constant "high alert" mode
  • Improving how your spine coordinates and stabilizes so your muscles can do their job supporting your joints
  • Reducing subluxations that irritate your nerves and add to your pain

When your nervous system is working better, your whole body has a better shot at functioning the way it's designed to — from your posture and coordination to your energy and sleep.

A Whole-Body Approach

EDS isn't just a "joint problem." It's a whole-body condition, and it deserves whole-body care. That means we look at how your entire spine and nervous system are functioning, not just where it hurts today. Many of my EDS patients also benefit from home exercises to strengthen the muscles that stabilize their loose joints — because a strong, well-coordinated body is your best defense.
