Text Neck: Why Your Posture Affects Your Whole Body

The Modern Posture Problem Is Bigger Than You Think

When most people hear the term "text neck," they picture a teenager hunched over a smartphone. But here at Omni Family Chiropractic in Richmond, I see this problem in people of every age — from busy professionals to retirees, and yes, plenty of teens too.

The truth is, we live in a forward-leaning world. Whether you're staring at a phone, typing at a computer, or scrolling on the couch, your head is likely drifting forward and down for hours every single day. And your body is paying the price.

What Happens When Your Head Goes Forward

Your head weighs about 10 to 12 pounds — roughly the weight of a bowling ball. When your head sits properly over your shoulders, your spine carries that weight efficiently. But for every inch your head moves forward, the strain on your neck multiplies.

One patient, a software developer in her 40s, came to me thinking she "just slept wrong." After we talked, it turned out she'd been working 10-hour days at her laptop for years. Her acute neck pain was really a chronic problem finally reaching a breaking point.

This is what I see most often: acute flare-ups of problems that have been quietly building for years. That sudden "crick" in your neck or pinching between your shoulder blades usually isn't sudden at all.

Why This Matters for Your Whole Body

Your spine protects your nervous system — the master control system that runs every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. When your posture pulls your spine out of alignment, it can create what we call a subluxation — a misalignment that interferes with how your nerves communicate.

This interference doesn't just cause neck pain. It can contribute to:

  • Headaches and jaw tension
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms and hands
  • Shoulder and upper back stiffness
  • Fatigue and poor sleep
  • Reduced range of motion over time

Simple Stretches You Can Start Today

Movement is medicine. While these stretches won't fix a long-standing problem on their own, they're a great way to ease tension and start undoing some of that forward pull. Do them gently, and never push into pain.

Chin Tucks (for the neck): Sit tall and gently draw your chin straight back, like you're making a "double chin." Hold for 5 seconds, repeat 8–10 times. This helps reposition your head over your shoulders.

Doorway Chest Stretch (for the chest): Stand in a doorway, place your forearms on the frame, and gently lean forward until you feel a stretch across your chest. Hold for 20–30 seconds. Hours of hunching tighten these muscles and pull you forward.

Shoulder Blade Squeezes (for the upper back): Sit or stand tall and squeeze your shoulder blades together as if holding a pencil between them. Hold for 5 seconds, repeat 10 times. This wakes up the muscles that keep you upright.

Upper Trapezius Stretch (for the shoulders and neck): Gently tilt one ear toward your shoulder until you feel a stretch along the opposite side of your neck. Hold for 20 seconds on each side.

Why Stretching Alone Isn't Enough

Here's the honest truth I share with my patients: stretches help, but they don't address the root of the problem. If your spine has been misaligned for years, the muscles will keep pulling you right back into that poor posture. It's like watering a plant in bad soil — you're treating the surface, not the foundation.

That's where chiropractic care comes in. By gently correcting subluxations and restoring proper alignment, we relieve the pressure on your nervous system and give your body the chance to heal and function the way it's designed to. Combined with the right home exercises, you can finally break the cycle of recurring pain.
